If you think your child may have a disability and may need special education or related services, you have the right to request an evaluation at any time — and it is free. You can also ask to meet with the team at any point if your child already has an IEP or 504 plan. You never have to wait for the school to suggest it first.
How to make the request
- Put your request in writing (email is fine) and send it to the Director of Special Education or your child’s principal.
- Briefly describe your concerns — what you’re seeing at home or hearing from teachers.
- The school will respond and, with your written consent, begin the evaluation.
What happens next
After you give written consent, the district completes the evaluation within the state timeline and meets with you to go over the results in plain language. If your child is found eligible, the team writes an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with you, and services begin promptly. You are a full member of the team, and meetings are scheduled around your availability. Interpreters are always provided at no cost.
