The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives parents and students over 18 (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records. Ririe Joint School District No. 252 provides this notice each year.
Your rights under FERPA
- The right to inspect and review your child’s education records within 45 days of a request.
- The right to request a correction of records you believe are inaccurate or misleading, and a hearing if the district declines.
- The right to provide written consent before the school discloses personally identifiable information, except where FERPA allows disclosure without consent (for example, to school officials with a legitimate educational interest).
- The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if you believe the district has not complied with FERPA.
Directory information & how to opt out
FERPA allows the district to disclose certain “directory information” — such as a student’s name, grade level, participation in activities and sports, and photographs — without consent, unless you tell us not to. If you do not want this information released (for example, in the yearbook, on this website, or to military recruiters), you must notify the office in writing.
